Positron Emission Tomography

Key requirements for photo-detectors used in medical imaging modalities such as Positron Emission Tomography:

- coupling to LSO, LYSO crystal -> sensitivity to blue light
- high number of photons -> dark rate and crosstalk are not an issue
- insensitivity to magnetic fields (inside NMR magnet)
- time resolution (TOF+PET)

Silicon Photomultipliers well meet these requirements. In additon they possess the following advantages compared to PMTs:

- low operation voltage
- small size allows to build highly granular and compact detectors

Our goal:

Study the application of SiPM devices to Positron Emission Tomography and to build and commission a prototype TOF-PET scanner.
